]]> Graham Hill finished second in this Lotus 49B at the 1968 U.S. Grand Prix; after sharing it with Jackie Oliver, for most of the season. This was chassis 49B/R6 which was driven to victory by Hill in Mexico later in the 1968 season. Graham Hill also drove this chassis during the first part of the 1969 season. He unfortunately, did not score anymore victories. After Hill was entrusted with a new car, chassis 49B/R6 was put in the hands of the newest Lotus team member, Jochen Rindt. The latter scored his maiden Grand Prix victory at Watkins Glen in October 1969. Rindt also drove 49B/R6 to victory at Monaco in May 1970, and driver Alex Soler-Roig made a final appearance of this Lotus 49B while attempting to qualify it at the French Grand Prix in July 1970.

]]> Future World Champion Mario Andretti made a spectacular Formula One debut by putting this well used Lotus 49B/R5 on the pole for the 1968 U.S. Grand Prix at Watkins Glen. All thoughts of winning were destroyed, however, on the thirty-third lap when Andretti retired from the race with a blown clutch. It is believed that the 1968 U.S. Grand Prix was the first race in which restraining belts were used by the Lotus team.

]]> In 1968, Jo Siffert raced the same Lotus 49 (49/R2) that Jim Clark had driven during the most part of 1967. The car, our item #GPC97004, was now painted in the famous blue and white colours of Rob Walker Racing. The team was a very successful independent operation in the days when private teams could still be competitive. Rob Walker, owner of the TWT team and heir to the vast Johnny Walker Scotch whisky fortune, had the first and only private team to ever defeat factory supported teams in World Championship Grand Prix racing! Rob Walker Racing did this nine times between 1958 and 1968 with such well known drivers as Stirling Moss, Jo Siffert, Jo Bonnier and Maurice Trintignant.

]]> Graham Hill scored his fourth of a total of five Monaco Grand Prix victories driving this brand new Lotus 49B at the annual May of 1968 Monte Carlo race. Monaco was the beginning of what was to become the year of the wing, and Team Lotus showed up with a wedge shaped car that sported a low mounted wing over the carburetors. Graham Hill’s record setting victory then, and the adhesion of the new, radically shaped Lotus, set wondering minds to thinking. Actually, that was all that was needed to set off the start of a Formula One wing explosion.

The car modeled by Exoto is Lotus 49B/R5 as driven by Hill at Monaco. This fabulous racing machine was also driven by Mario Andretti, Jackie Oliver and Bill Brack during the 1968 season. According to racing records, this car never raced again after the 1968 season was completed.
